Faculty Resources - Web Accessibility
Accessibility of Web Content
The Department of Justice has given state and local governments until April 2026 to be in compliance with Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act. This includes ensuring that web content, including Canvas courses, is accessible to people with disabilities.
More information can be found in the ADA Fact Sheet.
Canvas Course Accessibility Resources
To ensure your course follows legal requirements, use the following checklist to review your course material:
- All images, graphs, and figures included in my course have alternative text available.
- I provide official textbooks, high quality PDFs (text is selectable), and/or text-only documents for all readings in my course.
- All videos used in my course have closed captions available.
- All colorful content is high contrast and I do not use color alone to emphasize information. (eg, important text is not indicated by being highlighted in a color.)
- All modules, files, and links used in my course have descriptive names. (eg, "click here" is not a descriptive name for a link.)
This is not an exhaustive list of accessibility standards. Find more information here:
- View the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Accessibility Quick Reference Guide.
- View the full Web Accessibility In Mind (WebAIM) WCAG Checklist.
- View the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 508 Compliance Checklist.
