What is a sensory lounge?
A sensory lounge is a space designed to accommodate and support the diverse sensory
needs of individuals. It features a variety of sensory elements, such as soft lighting,
calming sounds, and tactile materials, allowing users to engage with their environment
in ways that suit their preferences.
The goal is to create an inclusive environment where individuals can explore their
sensory experiences, take breaks from overwhelming stimuli, and find a sense of agency
over their sensory inputs. Sensory lounges play a crucial role in promoting understanding
and acceptance of neurodiversity by recognizing and validating different sensory profiles.
Who can use the sensory lounge?
The sensory lounge is open to everyone. It’s a welcoming space designed for individuals
seeking a break from overstimulation or those who simply want to explore different
sensory experiences. Whether you’re neurodivergent, seeking a quiet moment, or curious
about sensory tools, all are encouraged to use the lounge. The key is to maintain
a respectful attitude towards the space and others using it. By being considerate
of each others needs and experiences, we can create a positive environment for everyone.
How can I involve a sensory lounge at my event?
Creating a sensory lounge at your event offers many benefits. It provides a calming
space for individuals who may feel overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle, allowing
them to recharge and manage sensory input. This can enhance their overall experience
and make your event more inclusive. Additionally, a sensory lounge promotes awareness
and acceptance of neurodiversity, demonstrating your commitment to accommodating diverse
needs. It can also foster community by providing a space where attendees can connect
over shared experiences and support each other.
Please contact the Center for Disability and Access to reserve the ‘Sensory Lounge
Banner’ which can help guide students to the space using a familiar visual. The Center
for Disability and Access can also provide guidance on how to set up the space, recommend
appropriate sensory tools and materials, and help ensure the lounge meets the needs
of all attendees.
