The U of U provides interpreters, real-time captioning, assistive listening devices, and note- taking services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students registered with CDS. These accommodations can also be provided to visitors on campus attending U of U sponsored activities. A fee is charged for accommodations for activities not sponsored by the U of U but being held on campus. Some general rules that must be met in order to receive these accommodations include:

  • Current documentation of hearing loss on file
  • Schedule of classes given to the Coordinator of Deaf Services as early as possible
  • Adherence to CDS Policy regarding use of services
  • Reasonable notification provided before an event
  • Other applicable rules specific to the situation

Contact the Coordinator of Deaf Services, Heather Jensen, at (801) 585-1813 (Voice/VP) or via e-mail, hjensen@sa.utah.edu.

Interpreters: interpreters are provided to those students who utilize sign, cued, or oral communication methods. Requests for interpreters must be made as far in advance as possible to ensure availability for an event. Interpreters are provided for semester length classes, workshops/conferences, meetings with professors, and other activities that require student participation.
